The Big River four-wheel-drive track starts 9 km along Soldiers Road, after the Alborns Walk carpark. Soldiers Road turnoff is signposted on SH7, just south of Reefton.
The track twists through regenerating beech forest and passes many mining sites before opening out to the barren Big River settlement and Big River Hut. This track includes sections of gravel road and rougher rocky sections, as well as stream crossings which flood in heavy rain.
You can either head back the same way or continue on the Waiuta to Big River Track (walking and biking only).
It is challenging mountain biking on a rough and unmaintained 4WD track. It includes mixed surfaces of gravel, mud and rock with some steep descents.
This track makes up part of the Tour Aotearoa route through Reefton.
Very rocky and wet with lots of puddles and fords after all the recent rain. Some areas of the road are quite washed out - some of the culverts on the corners can be tricky. Take care - you will get muddy and wet!
