The Konini Track provides access from Reefton, via the reservoir on the Reefton Walkway, to the communication antenna that sits on the hill east of town, and then beyond to the top of the Machine Track and the Ajax Mine, and Waitahu Saddle loop.
Starting at the reservoir (walk between the reservoir and the water pumping station), a good wide grassy track climbs steeply for 15 min to a picnic table where you can view the Inangahua River valley, and get above the clouds and into sunshine on a foggy day. From here an often muddy track heads east before joining a 4WD road to the antenna for a total vertical climb of 300 m to this point.
The Konini track then enters beech forest, and continues upwards for another 30 min to the junction of the Machine Track-Ajax Mine access, passing an excellent point for viewing Reefton town from high above. From the junction you can head down the steep Machine track to Black’s Point (and back to Reefton for a total 2-3 hour loop), or continue around the half-day Murray Creek tracks loop via Waitahu saddle.
