ABOUT THIS TRACK
The Murray Creek tracks provide diverse options for exploring the forest and historic mining sites near Reefton. Starting from the carpark at Black’s Point, you have two options, a well-graded track uphill to the Waitahu saddle (approximately 5 km), crossing Murray Creek by bridge after 20 min, with a side-trip to the historic Energetic Mine shaft that sits a few hundred metres west immediately following this crossing. Continuing up the hill you pass the old Cement Town site, where the creek is recrossed at another bridge, and then ascend to the saddle via the historic Chandler’s Mine site.
From Waitahu saddle, it is possible to access the Waitahu river valley, and ultimately Montgomery and Kirwin’s Huts, or continue northwards passing the access track to the Inglewood mine site, Ajax mine, and return to Black’s Point down the steep Machine Track, completing a half-day anti-clockwise loop. The route can be completed clockwise, by first ascending the Machine track, though this is a steep climb and a good level of fitness is required.
Options are to head back to Reefton from the top of the Machine track via the Konini Track (another 4km, mostly downhill), or to take in the full Murray Creek track loop by starting at Reefton, ascending the Konini track, looping clockwise via the Ajax Mine and Waitahu Saddle, climbing the first section of the Machine Track from the Black’s Point carpark, and returning to Reefton via the Pipeline and Tram Track loop.
